Infrastructure will be improved: Deák Square and Kölcsey Street will be resurfaced, street lighting will be installed and green islands will be created.

A health resort development project in Hévíz, which was started earlier with EU funding but abandoned by the contractor, can be completed with domestic budget funds, the mayor of the town said at a press conference on Friday.

Gábor Papp (Fidesz-KDNP) recalled that the contractor who won the open public tender took over the site of the former bus station in the spring of 2021. However, two and a half years later, in October 2023, the city government terminated the contract with the contractor of the project, which was launched with HUF 1.1 billion EU funding and later supplemented with HUF 250 million, because the work was not completed, and legal proceedings were initiated.

The former bus station will also be demolished

The mayor said that the construction was 25-30 percent complete, but in order to avoid financial or legal retaliation by the end of the EU financial cycle, which ends at the end of 2023, the municipality managed to obtain Hungarian state support. According to the government's decision, the development of the city centre of Hévíz can be completed with slightly reduced technical content.

According to the original plans, the project will continue to serve the expansion of the city centre, with new paving and street lighting on Deák Square and Kölcsey Street, and the creation of green islands. The former bus station would have been used as a tourist information office, but now it will be demolished and replaced by a medicinal water drinking fountain, and later an outdoor stage will be built, said Gábor Papp.

He indicated that a new public procurement procedure for the completion of the abandoned construction is expected to be launched in August. If successful, it is expected that the spa development project could be completed by 31 December, at the end of a two to three-month work process.
