The reconstruction of Füzér Castle can continue

Published

More than a decade into the reconstruction of one of the oldest stone castles in Hungary, the contractor for the third phase has been selected.

Standing on a 552-metre-high hill, Füzér Castle is one of the most unique buildings of our built heritage. Partly because it is one of the oldest surviving stone fortresses in Hungary, and partly because it stands on a volcanic cone, one of Hungary's seven natural wonders. Built in the early 13th century, the fortress played an important role in the post-Battle of Mohács period. The Holy Crown was once hidden and kept here.

The entire area of the castle has been explored

The castle was owned by nobles, including the Báthory, Nádasdy and Károlyi families. In 1676, the castle was burnt down by the imperial army in retaliation for the Wesselényi conspiracy. Part of the fortress, which was left as a torso, was scattered. After several attempts, its revival began in 1990, when the entire castle was excavated by experts.

A decade of preparation, a decade of construction

More than a decade of preparation resulted in the reconstruction of the Lower Castle in Füzér, Borsod County, between 2012 and 2015. The Sziklagyep visitor trail was also created alongside the outer defences.
Our portal also reported regularly on the work and the process of the castle's rebirth .

For ten years, visitors have been able to use the road and car park leading to the castle and the promenade. The Chapel of the Upper Castle, which serves as a Gothic ecumenical place of worship, the Palace Wing, the Basement, the Bastion and the Lower Bastion were completed. Work on the second phase began in 2019, with the Kitchen and the Bakehouse being rebuilt.

New parts of the castle come to life

As in previous phases, LAKI Épületszobrász Zrt. was awarded the contract for the implementation of phase III of the project, worth HUF 3.98 billion, according to the EU public procurement notice announcement published in the EU public procurement bulletin. The company's tasks will include the reconstruction of the four levels of the Gate Tower and the Sáfárház. The reconstruction of the Gate Bastion, the Dungeon and the Clock Tower will also be carried out during this phase. The area affected by the construction work is approximately 650 square metres.

Structural strengthening of the castle walls

Laki Zrt.'s experts will also reinforce the castle walls in the designated section, and will demolish almost 400 square metres of the Castle moat. They will also install the electrical network and fire alarm systems.
