What is being built?
One of Budapest’s busiest junctions is being revamped, and the interlinked project is being expanded
Tens of thousands of people use it every day, yet the Nyugati Square underpass in the capital has gone without renovation for decades. This shortcoming can now be remedied by BKK by incorporating the complete renovation of the Nyugati Square underpass into the ongoing planning of the Pest-Buda interconnecting tram line.
Last autumn, we reported that for phase II of the Pest tram interconnection project , BKK had signed a design contract with FŐMTERV Zrt., the winner of the conditional public procurement procedure. The project will establish a direct fixed-track link between North Pest and South Buda: the most exciting part of this is the construction of a new tram line between Lehel Square and Deák Ferenc Square.
According to its announcement, BKK is now drawing down the optional work package associated with the project, thereby triggering the regeneration of Nyugati Square and its surroundings. Based on the design brief outlined, the works will include the renewal of street lighting, fire safety systems, mechanical engineering and utilities, as well as the construction of a modern public toilet. During the design process, the designer will also explore opportunities for improving pedestrian and public space connections.
They emphasise that renovation has become necessary due to both the technical and aesthetic condition of the Nyugati Square underpass: no significant modernisation has taken place since the 45-year-old underpass was opened.
