One of the main squares in a Hungarian town in Upper Hungary has been revitalised with a new statue of the Virgin Mary
Alongside Révkomárom, Dunaszerdahely is the other most ‘Hungarian’ town in the Upper Lands and is a popular destination for day trips, thanks to its thermal baths and favourable location. This town in the Csallóköz region has now further enhanced its appeal to tourists: one of its distinctive community spaces in the town centre has been given a new look.
According to ma7.sk reports that, alongside the recently opened Ármin Vámbéry Square, the adjoining passageway has also been refurbished. The project, funded by the European Union, forms part of a comprehensive Slovak-Hungarian programme involving Somorja, Mosonmagyaróvár, Bratislava and Győr.
New well and automatic watering system
One of the key elements of the development at Ármin Vámbéry Square was a significant increase in green space, which was expanded from 82 square metres to 497 square metres.
In addition, twenty new deciduous trees and seven new flowerbeds were planted. These were complemented by concrete kerbs, built-in seating areas and reliefs depicting the town’s coat of arms, as well as a green wall, a pergola and a drinking fountain.
To ensure sustainable maintenance, a new well was drilled and an automatic irrigation system was installed. As part of the development, the paving in the square and the passageway was renewed, the necessary structural repairs were carried out, and the corrugated iron roofing above the passageway was also replaced.
In place of the former, now defunct fountain, a statue of the Virgin Mary has been installed on a new plinth, highlighted by modern LED floor lighting.
