Budafok-Tétény traffic speeds up with a roundabout

Published

In the XXII district, not only a new junction was built, but also the cycle path, the pavement and the stormwater drainage system were upgraded.

The newly built roundabout at the junction of Tóth József Street, Kossuth Lajos Street, Nagytétényi Road and Mária Terézia Street in the XXII. district and in the vicinity of the junction will help to ensure faster and safer traffic.

In the BKK project, the road reconstruction project, which is a key element of the Budafok-Tétény road, has renewed the cycle path parallel to the road and improved pedestrian traffic conditions.

With the construction of the roundabout, the traffic flow and design of the junction has changed significantly. The aim of BKK was to facilitate faster progress from Tóth József Street towards Budafok and to reduce traffic hazards for car, bicycle and pedestrian users through construction works and traffic engineering interventions.

During the investment, the BKK

- built a roundabout at the intersection of Tóth József utca, Kossuth Lajos utca, Nagytétényi út, Mária Terézia utca;

- rebuilt the cycle path parallel to Nagytétényi út and Mária Terézia utca;

- up to the junction with Donszky Árpád Street, the connecting Mária Terézia Street has been upgraded, creating a bus lane almost 350 metres long, helping bus users to move faster;

- reconstructed the crossing between Donszky Árpád Street and the Budafok-Belváros railway station on Mária Terézia Street;

- upgraded the pavements and kerbs, and created barrier-free pedestrian crossings, making the road safer for residents and the public;

- renovated the street lighting network, its poles and luminaires, and

- planted more than 20 trees and 880 shrubs.

The Tóth József Street area has been renewed underground

As part of the investment, BKK renewed the stormwater drainage system, which now drains water from Tóth József Street more efficiently than before. As part of the utility replacement works, the contractor upgraded the electrical supply network, renewed some sections of the drinking water mains by laying modern pipes, installed new fire hydrants and replaced the telecommunications networks.

Road construction started in February this year and finished in early December. The technical handover process, which is still underway, may still involve some minor corrections to minor field works.

Further developments in the district

The construction of the roundabout is the first phase of a larger project, the next major investment in the district could be the complex regeneration of the Town Hall Square and its surroundings. The details of this are set out in the Budapest Mobility Plan (BMT), which summarises the capital's transport improvements. At the moment, the financial backing is not secured, but if the necessary funds become available, it will include

- Kossuth Lajos Street and Mária Terézia Street can also be renewed;

- B+R parking would be built at the Town Hall Square;

- new pedestrian crossings can be created;

- three tram stops in the area (Budafok junction, Leányka Street housing estate and Savoyai Jenő Square) can be made accessible.
