Under the TOP Plusz project, more than 330 kilometres of infrastructure are being upgraded, primarily using EU funds; the works also include a comprehensive bridge renovation.

The new Minister for Construction had already given priority to the renovation of minor roads during his committee hearing, identifying the improvement of the road network as an urgent task. Our attention was also drawn to a recently published TED notice, following the announcement of the results of Magyar Közút Nzrt. in its public procurement for the purchase of hot mix asphalt. According to public data, hot mix asphalt – one of the primary materials used in road development – will be supplied by the winning construction companies in a total of 21 regions under framework agreements. Prompted by this news, we were curious about the public road operator’s development goals for this year, which the company was happy to share with us following our enquiry.

Work is being carried out on more than 330 kilometres, funded mainly by the EU

According to the summary, Magyar Közút is once again implementing major road renovation and transport development programmes across the country this year, using both European Union and domestic funding.

Under the TOP Plusz Programme, 119 projects are currently underway, primarily aimed at modernising the 4- and 5-digit secondary road network. The investments cover a total of 331.7 kilometres of road, with a total value of approximately 61.2 billion forints.

In addition, preparations are underway for a further 15 projects, with construction work expected to begin later this year. These will enable the renewal of a further 32.7 kilometres of road network. (Funding for the Regional and Urban Development Operational Programme Plus (83%) consists of European Union grants, supplemented by domestic co-financing under 17% – Ed.)

A comprehensive bridge renovation is also among the developments

The summary sent to our newspaper goes on to state that, in addition to the improvements included in the TOP Plusz Programme, 22 road sections have been upgraded across the country so far in 2026: covering a total length of 41.3 kilometres, at a cost of nearly 7.9 billion forints.

Seven projects funded from domestic sources have already been successfully completed this year, with a total value of approximately 5.71 billion forints. Three of these projects involved the renovation of secondary roads in the 4th and 5th categories, covering a total length of 7.9 kilometres at a cost of 1.38 billion forints.

The developments also include the complete refurbishment of a bridge, at a cost of approximately 3.746 billion forints, as well as the upgrading of three cycle paths, covering a total length of 9.3 kilometres.

Infrastructure development linked to the BYD investment in Szeged stands out

The road operator’s report adds that several major investment projects are currently underway. Among these, they highlight the development of transport infrastructure linked to the BYD investment in Szeged, which is worth nearly 27 billion forints. In addition, six further road renovation projects are under way, covering a total length of 7.5 kilometres and worth approximately 4.319 billion forints.

They also explain that the tasks for the coming period include the preparation of a further nine main and secondary road renovation projects, covering a total of 12.9 kilometres of road. In parallel with this, preparations are also underway for nine cycle path renovation projects, covering a total length of 7.9 kilometres.

In conclusion, they emphasise that the aim of Magyar Közút is to continuously improve the state of the country’s transport infrastructure through the efficient use of available resources, to enhance road safety, and to contribute to the economic development and improved accessibility of the regions.
