The future of Rákosrendező is on track – Preparations for the Nyugati railway station development can begin
A consortium comprising Infraplan Railway and Road Design Ltd and TRENECON Tanácsadó és Tervező Kft. has been awarded a design contract worth over 1 billion forints for the development of the approach sections to Budapest Nyugati railway station.
According to the information published on TED, a feasibility study, an environmental impact assessment, planning and construction drawings, as well as the tender documentation required for the subsequent construction contract will be prepared under a contract worth a net 1.087 billion forints for the development of the railway section between Budapest-Nyugati railway station and Rákosrendező.
Nyugati Station is to be expanded
One of the most important elements of the project is the development of Control Centre No. 2 at Nyugati railway station . The control centre acts as one of the „control hubs” for rail traffic; it is from here that points and signals are operated, ensuring the safe movement of trains.
As part of the project, a new second passing loop is also being built. The passing loop enables trains to move from one track to another, allowing them to manoeuvre flexibly between multiple arrival and departure tracks, and enabling the station to handle as many trains as possible.
The design brief includes the reconstruction of the track network, the modernisation of signalling systems, the upgrading of power supply and telecommunications systems, as well as preparations for new road links and Park & Ride facilities.
Railways serving the new district
The investment project currently being prepared goes beyond the development of Nyugati railway station. According to the proposal by the Budapest Metropolitan Municipality, one of the fundamental prerequisites for the large-scale urban development planned for the Rákosrendező area is the complete modernisation and capacity expansion of the railway line between Budapest-Nyugati and Rákospalota-Újpest.
According to the plans, a modern urban district is to be developed on the current, underutilised railway site, with the railway playing a key role in providing public transport services.
New station in Rákosrendező
Under the plan, a completely new Rákosrendező railway station with four platforms would be built on the site of the old station. As a result of the development, trains could run as frequently as every 10 minutes towards Nyugati station during peak hours.
The plans provide for half-hourly passenger train and half-hourly commuter train services to lines 2, 70 and 71, which could significantly improve connections between the northern suburbs and Budapest.
According to the development plans, Rákosrendező could become a major transport hub in the future, which could help relieve some of the pressure on Nyugati railway station.
Alongside the railway developments, the capital’s plans also envisage the creation of a new pedestrian and cycle route running through green spaces. The route would link the area around Nyugati railway station with Rákosrendező, passing through Dózsa György út, Vágány utca and Dévényi utca.
