The reconstruction of István út and Pozsonyi utca in Újpest is continuing with the third phase

As we have reported on several occasions, a major transport development is underway in Újpest. HE-DO is set to renovate certain sections of Pozsonyi Street and István Road, covering a length of approximately 1,700 metres, between Madridi Street and Deák Ferenc Street.

In a recent announcement, BKK informed the public. As this reveals, the aim of the development is to make István út and Pozsonyi utca in Újpest safer and more modern. The project is in line with the objectives of the Budapest City Council, which aim to improve the quality of life in Budapest and to make public spaces safer and more accessible.

As part of this, the road surface will be resurfaced, public spaces will be tidied up, pedestrian and cycle links will be improved, new green spaces will be created, and accessible junctions will be built.

The road resurfacing project, which is shaping transport in Újpest, is entering a new phase: following the asphalting of the carriageway on the Danube side, due to begin on 7 July, the modernisation of István út and Pozsonyi utca is expected to continue with the third phase from 13 July. As the works progress, traffic arrangements in the area will change; therefore, road users should continue to expect restrictions and longer journey times.

Following the completion of the road resurfacing works, which are scheduled to begin on 7 July, the following traffic changes are expected to come into effect from 13 July:

• on the section of István út and Pozsonyi utca between Deák Ferenc utca and Tél utca – on the side facing the old Town Hall – the inner traffic lane will become a construction zone; traffic may use the new outer traffic lane;
• on the section of István út between Árpád út and Lőrincz utca, on the side facing the Document Office, the inner traffic lane will be converted into a construction zone; traffic may use the outer lane;
• Following this, on 15 July, preparatory work for the laying of water mains will begin on the service road between Lőrincz Street and Király Street; during this time, parking will not be permitted on site;
• At the junction of Tél Street and Pozsonyi Street, the traffic flow for the right-turn lane leading from Pozsonyi Street onto Tél Street will change; vehicles will be able to turn into Tél Street by passing the central reservation on the left;
• At the junction of Tél Street and Pozsonyi Street, drivers turning left from Tél Street should expect a narrowing of the carriageway;
• The inner lanes of István út will become a construction zone in the vicinity of the junction; traffic will be restricted to the outer lanes.

In the later stages of the project, once the inner traffic lanes on István út have been completed, water main construction work will continue in front of the Újpest Cultural Centre. At that point, Jókai utca and Király utca will temporarily become dead ends, whilst it will only be possible to turn into Petőfi utca in a slight arc from the direction of Árpád út.
