Water management
A comprehensive environmental assessment is being carried out to lay the foundations for the modernisation of the Royal Palace in Gödöllő
The Royal Palace and its park in Gödöllő are set to undergo a comprehensive renovation , with the aim of modernising the buildings and surroundings of this outstanding Baroque heritage complex, as well as ensuring the long-term sustainable development of its tourist and cultural functions.
The works affect approximately 18,800 square metres of buildings, whilst the interventions must fully comply with strict heritage protection regulations, as well as the nature conservation requirements for the Duna–Ipoly Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság, which manages the approximately 26.1-hectare castle park.
As a basis for the renovation, a detailed environmental assessment is being carried out, which, in addition to the main areas of the castle, may optionally cover a further 17,272 square metres. According to the latest public procurement notice states that this contract was awarded to EY denkstatt Környezettechnológiai és Management Tanácsadó Kft. with a bid of approximately 46 million forints; the company’s experts will therefore be tasked with identifying past and present environmental impacts. This process will begin with the analysis of historical data and site inspections, followed by laboratory testing of soil and groundwater samples to determine the extent of any contamination.
We may soon find out why historic buildings suffer from damp
The investigations also cover surface and subsurface water conditions, as it is necessary to identify the external causes of damp in the buildings.
In addition, they are assessing the hazardous materials present in the buildings – such as asbestos or the lead content of paint layers – to ensure that the refurbishments can be carried out safely. As the condition of the buildings varies greatly, and some parts are in a particularly poor, life-threatening state, the interior of the Udvarmesteri building will be excluded from the immediate inspections for safety reasons.
