Ensuring an adequate supply of materials was a key issue during the construction of the nearly 30-kilometre section.

As reported in our newspaper, traffic began on 27 October on the M49 expressway between the M3 motorway and Ököritófülpös. The Duna Aszfalt Építő Zrt. has provided information on the technical details of the development and the continuation of the M49 Dávid Vitézy, Minister for Investment and Transport, held a briefing on site that day.

As part of the project, four multi-level junctions and five roundabouts were completed, along with 22 engineering structures; rest areas were also created, and the 3.3-kilometre Győrtelek bypass was built.

The construction of the engineering structures built at the end of the section determined the timetable

Our newspaper obtained more detailed information about this large-scale investment – which, amongst other things, involves the construction of a motorway link to Northern Transylvania – with the help of the deputy project manager at Duna Aszfalt Építő Zrt.. Péter Czeglédi told us that by 2026, construction work would typically have reached the finishing stages – mainly on the first half of the section to be built, up to kilometre marker 14+000 – whilst significant construction tasks still lay ahead for the specialists beyond Kraszna.

The engineer added that the construction of the structures at the end of the section had a major impact on the scheduling of further work, including the construction of the track structure and the completion of the hydraulic engineering works.

Following this, construction gained new momentum in the summer of 2026, and from the end of July, finishing works began across almost the entire section. These included the installation of traffic control systems, the construction of wildlife fencing, the completion of the operational telecommunications network, and the completion of the final works required on the bridges.

A sufficient supply of materials was a key issue

In a project of this scale, meeting deadlines is not determined solely by the coordination of construction technology and work processes. „As with any project of this scale, a huge amount of material had to be moved and installed, so here too the most important and critical aspect was securing this vast quantity of material and ensuring it was delivered to site on time,” emphasised Péter Czeglédi.

In addition to supplying fill materials, sandy gravel and crushed stone for the track structure, the logistics tasks also included the procurement of the concrete and steel components required for bridge construction, the bridge girders, and the numerous concrete elements used in hydraulic engineering works.

The deputy project manager made special mention of the hybrid bridge built over the Kraszna River. Here, coordinating the manufacture and on-site delivery of the steel main girder components required for the construction proved to be a key challenge.

No matter how much routine and experience you have, there’s always a challenge waiting to be solved

The deputy project manager has been involved in the construction of expressways and motorways for almost ten years. He says that this period has given him considerable experience and expertise, but the construction of the M49 represented a particularly important milestone in his career, as he was able to be involved in the project from the preparatory stages right through to completion.

Despite many years of experience, the team of experts encountered a number of new challenges requiring solutions on this project as well. Péter Czeglédi stated that all colleagues and contributors involved in the construction can be proud of the result. The completed section of road not only marks the completion of a major engineering and construction project, but may also contribute to the development of transport links in the region.

Thanks to the new section of the M49, it will be possible to travel more quickly and safely from one of Hungary’s easternmost regions to the capital, and even on to Western Europe.
