Mapei is involved as technical support for the re-paving of the south corridors of the Colosseum
History, culture and commitment to protecting artistic and architectural heritage – the Mapei is participating as a technical sponsor in the repaving of the southern corridors of one of the world's most famous and popular monuments, the Colosseum. The aim of the project is to restore the two missing rings on the south side and open a new sector to the public, thereby restoring the amphitheatre's original geometric shape, according to information provided to our newspaper by Mapei.
Mapei has joined the project as part of a public procurement tender launched by Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, and will provide a new generation of building materials developed in its own R&D laboratories.
"We are delighted to be involved in the restoration of one of the Colosseum's most important monuments," said Veronica Squinzi, CEO of Mapei. "For us, this project means contributing to the preservation and enhancement of the value of our cultural heritage by developing innovative products that respect tradition. This commitment stems from our passion for art and culture and our sense of responsibility to preserve our monuments for future generations."
The project, coordinated by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, has in recent years excavated the crumbling parts of the first and second circular corridors on the south side and the layers that indicate recycling. These corridors had already collapsed during the 6th and 7th centuries as a result of demolitions and earthquakes, and over the centuries they have been plundered and recycled. Following the completion of excavation and documentation work, the area is now being reused to improve the accessibility and interpretability of the monument. This is being done using modern materials that are chemically and physically compatible with the existing structure, while respecting contemporary restoration standards.
Contribution of Mapei
The damaged area in the southern corridors will be repaired with a new lime-based, cement-free screed using Mape-Antique NHL Eco Massetto*. Travertine tiles are laid over the screed with Mape-Antique NHL Eco Adesivo*, a lime-based, cement-free adhesive. Both products are new-generation developments, created in record time in the Mapei R&D laboratory, using ingredients similar to Roman materials such as lime in innovative ways to achieve the best performance. Underlining the importance of the project, the company decided to create for the first time dedicated packaging for the Colosseum for the products used, the release highlights.
