Station renewal programme of MÁV started in Esztergom and Leányvár
The MÁV Group has launched a station renovation programme covering more than 30 locations in 14 counties across the country, with a budget of HUF 15 billion, which will be financed from its own resources and the Hungarian Village Programme, announced Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of the MÁV Group, at a press conference held today in Esztergom, where the programme was launched. The CEO had previously commented on the programme on Facebook, which we reported on here.
The railway station renovation programme was launched in two municipalities of Komárom-Esztergom county, Leányvár and Esztergom-Kertváros. At the latter station, the toilet block will be renewed, a modern and air-conditioned waiting room will be built and the building and its surroundings will be made barrier-free.
MP Gábor Erős said,
In the region, besides Esztergom, improvements have also started in Leányvár, where the building is undergoing a complete renovation: the waiting room and the toilet block will be renewed and the building's surroundings will be made accessible. In addition to the railway, bus services are also being improved, with the train service between Bajót and Mogyorósbánya being adapted to the timetable.
He noted that before 2022, the Budapest-Esztergom line had 2 million passengers a year, but this number has now risen to over 6 million.
At the event, Mayor Ádám Hernádi said, among other things, that the Esztergom-Kertváros railway station will be developed to create a worthy passenger reception area, waiting room and toilets.
New lightweight buildings built on 11 sites
Zsolt Hegyi's words also revealed that the station renovation programme, which has just started, will be completed in the summer of 2026. He said that the Hungarian Village programme will finance the construction of lightweight buildings at 11 stations, where there were no stations before or where they were demolished due to their condition.
The MÁV group's own resources will be used to renovate buildings, waiting rooms and toilet blocks in more than 20 other locations. In most places, the station environment will also be transformed and, where necessary, passenger information facilities will be improved. There will also be sites where underpasses and stairs leading to the platforms will be renovated and a new stop will be built," he said.
He highlighted the renovation of Gyula's historic railway building, which will regain its pre-WWII appearance after the works.
