Planners are being sought for the development of 53 kilometres of railway line.

An important step has been taken towards the future implementation of a long-awaited railway project in Western Transdanubia, the Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium: the call for tenders for the preparation of the electrification and reconstruction of the Zalaszentiván–Nagykanizsa railway line has been published in the EU public procurement notice here.

The winning contractors will be responsible for the redesign of approximately 53 track-kilometres of single track on the affected section of railway line 17. This will include the design of upgrades to stations, stops, safety equipment, roads, structures, utilities and other facilities along the line. The task will take the designers 1140 days - just over 3 years - to complete.

The project concerns the southern half of line 17, marked in red.

As the call for tenders states, the tasks include obtaining environmental permits and preparing the construction plans. In addition to the redesign of the railway track of the section, the winning contractors will also be responsible for preparing the construction documents for the overhead contact line, the railway safety equipment and the telecommunications.

New bus stops and new P+R and B+R car parks will be built

In addition, the winning engineering firm or firms will be required to draw up plans for two new stops: "Kanizsavár" on railway line 17 in Nagykanizsa and "Újkanizsa" on railway line 30. It also turns out that the design speed is 100/80 km/h.

The Ministry is awaiting plans for the construction of 160 m long passenger platforms with level access and P+R and B+R parking facilities at the passenger service stations on the railway line (Alsónemesapáti, Búcsúszentlászló, Zalaszentmihály-Pacsa, Pötréte, Felsőrajk, Gelse and Kanizsavár). The passenger facilities at the service stations without passenger traffic (Nagykapornak, Kiliman, Magyarszerdahely and Újudvar) are expected to be demolished.
