Flórián Square: the old asphalt surface has been removed across the entire width of the northern bridge.
The renovation of the northern overpass at Flórián Square in District III of the capital city is proceeding steadily and according to the preliminary schedule, according to Budapesti Közlekedési Központ (BKK). Since the bridge was completely closed on 21 November, demolition work has been the main focus:
- The old asphalt surface was milled across the entire width of the bridge deck, and nearly half a thousand cubic metres of milled asphalt was removed.;
- the existing insulation of the reinforced concrete track slab was removed;
- They began dismantling the steel bridge components and transporting the elements away.
The general construction of the Flórián Square project is being carried out by KM Építő Kft. with the cooperation of HE-DO, as we regularly report. The implementation plans were prepared by FŐMTERV Mérnöki Tervező Zrt..
Before the festive season, the installation of the suspended protective scaffolding system connected to the superstructure will continue on the northern overpass, followed by the demolition of the bridge edges. The contractor would use a different technology for this than before, so they are currently conducting trial demolitions.
During the Christmas and New Year period, work will be suspended to ensure peace and quiet for local residents, but from 5 January 2026, renovation work will continue with tasks that can be carried out in winter weather conditions.
Detailed structural analysis aids further decisions
An important part of the work is the detailed assessment of the condition of the reinforced concrete deck of the bridge. The aim of this is to enable experts to select the safest and most technically appropriate solution for the renovation based on the data collected. As the demolition work progresses, the unique characteristics of the superstructure become visible. On-site and laboratory tests provide an accurate picture of the extent of salt corrosion in reinforced concrete structures.
The poor technical condition of the southern overpass at the start of the renovation, which required significant additional work and much more complex technical interventions than planned, has prompted experts to carry out condition assessments with even greater care than usual.
