What is being built?
One of the busiest ground handling routes at Liszt Ferenc Airport is being renovated
Investments aimed at increasing the capacity of the airport, making its operation safer and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations can begin at Liszt Ferenc International Airport. According to the calls for tenders published in the EU public procurement bulletin, developments affecting the airport's most heavily used operational areas can now be implemented.
The artery of ground handling services is being modernised
A contractor is sought for the renovation of the concrete pavement of the service road in front of Terminal 2B and the complete construction of a new, centralised de-icing and ice removal base. The planned service road renovation affects the T2B service road leading directly to the aircraft service area. This is an integral part of the concrete pavement in front of the terminal lobby. The section concerned is one of the busiest routes for ground handling, with significant cross-traffic due to service vehicles, GSE areas (where baggage carriers, fuel trucks, tractors and passenger safety equipment are stored and prepared) and car parks, so the technical condition of the pavement has a direct impact on operational safety. According to the tender, a new basalt-additive concrete pavement will be laid on an area of approximately 5,400 square metres. During construction, the affected IT, electrical and water utility networks must be protected, and a drainage system must also be installed.
New 53,000 square metre area supports machine servicing
In addition to the high-priority service road, a development that is also of strategic importance for airport operations is in the preparatory stage: the construction of a new central de-icing area and parking spaces in the vicinity of Terminal 2. As part of the investment, a concrete-covered area of nearly 53,000 square metres will be created, which will be suitable for servicing several aircraft at the same time and will provide direct access to existing taxiways, service roads and utility networks.
Open storage areas and service roads will also be built.
The project includes not only the construction of the pavement, but also the installation of the entire energy supply and utility infrastructure, high-capacity optical and structured data cabling, a complex drainage system, as well as basic IT and security infrastructure. The development will include a social building, a covered open storage area, new service roads and car parks, as well as a lighting and obstacle light system. The successful bidder will also be responsible for completing the necessary licensing procedures and preparing the complete construction documentation. The public procurement tenders now announced show that the operator of Budapest Airport continues to place a strong emphasis on developments, the safe handling of growing traffic and maintaining technical standards in line with international expectations.
Passenger traffic exceeded 19 million in December
The beginning of December marked a significant milestone in the 75-year history of the airport: before the end of the year, the airport's annual traffic reached 19 million passengers. Parallel to this dynamic growth, the airport and its infrastructure are also expanding. As our portal previously reported reported earlier, a unified Airport Service Centre will be built for terminal operational staff as part of the development of the areas surrounding Terminal 2. The office building would provide accommodation for ground service personnel, airline staff and certain organisational units of the Budapest Airport group.
Preparations for the construction of Terminal 3 are in full swing
In the middle of summer, we presented two significant preparatory works necessary for the future construction of Terminal 3. The experts at STRABAG Építő Kft. were entrusted with the task of carrying out the earthworks and landscaping prior to the expansion of the airside apron. This involves filling approximately 36,000 square metres and constructing a 360-metre-long retaining wall. The future apron will be used for servicing aircraft, boarding and disembarking passengers, loading and unloading cargo, refuelling and parking.
Airport infrastructure is also being developed
In November 2024, reported on our website that the sewage system at Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport would be renovated. A new main sewer will be built over a length of approximately two and a half kilometres, and the pipe network will be renovated over a further 300-metre section by the experts of Colas Alterra Zrt. specialists. With this investment, the new sewage network will reliably serve the airport and its growing passenger traffic. Upon completion of the project, the system's capacity will increase to 1,080 cubic metres per day, which will be capable of discharging 30 litres of sewage per second at peak times.
