Duna Aszfalt makes impressive progress in Hungary's largest bridge project

Published

The Kalocsa branch of the bridge is close to closure.

The largest bridge construction project currently underway in Hungary, between Paks and Kalocsa, will shorten the route by 70 kilometres. The new Danube bridge, the twentieth bridge on the Hungarian section of the Danube, is expected to be completed by the summer of 2024, according to Duna Aszfalt Zrt. – according to magyarepitok.hu. The structures diverting the waters of the Danube (which divert the main current in a favourable direction for the bridge under construction, reducing the load on the new bridge piers) have been completed, and the bridge structure, consisting of two floodplain bridges and one riverbed bridge, may take its final form this year.

The Kalocsa site is a forerunner of the finished bridge

The structure of the framework structure on the left bank of the Danube has been completed and the asphalt has been laid. The 220-metre long structure of the bridge over the left bank of the Danube has been completed, and the dilatation structure has been installed at the first end of the bridge.

This section, with the installed cycle rails and the harmonious unity of the structure, is a forerunner of the finished bridge"

- stressed the summary sent to our newspaper.

Following the salt protection and sealing works on the Kalocsa side of the superstructure, the cast asphalting of the carriageway has started, while the main structure of the bridge has already received a full corrosion protection coating. The test walkway inside the bridge has now been completed, and the electrical and bridge monitoring network is also being installed in phases.

The Kalocsa branch of the Medieval Bridge is close to closure

The left-hand pylons, rising 40 metres above the average water level of the Danube, already contribute to the load-bearing capacity of the riverbed bridge with eight levels (32 pieces) of inclined cables, while seven levels (28 pieces) of inclined cables were installed on the Paks pylons by PANNON-FREYSSINET Kft.. The main support structure of the Kalocsa branch of the river bridge installed by Hídépítő Zrt. extends 82.5 metres from the support, while the Paks branch of the bridge extends exactly 1 zöm (3.5 metres) less, at 77.5 metres, over the international shipping route, which has been operating without disruption throughout the entire duration of the project. Only 3 zöm (3x5 metres) are missing from the Kalocsa branch of the bridge to connect it to the floodplain bridge structure.

Construction of the reinforced concrete structure of the right bank framework has started

The 286-metre-long, two-thousand-tonne steel superstructure of the right-hand floodplain bridge now rests on its planned truss structures. On the track, the bridge components (e.g. the bridge girder, the girder plates for the handrails and the candelabra) have been installed in stages, so that

The structure could receive final corrosion protection and insulation later this year.

The assembly hall of the Paks floodplain bridge has been dismantled, so that the construction of the reinforced concrete structure of the frame structure on the saved side of the flood protection embankment can also begin, which will ensure the smooth traffic of the water management directorates and the emergency services under the newly built road No. 512.
