46% of the road network operated by the company has been rejuvenated, i.e. resurfaced.

Since 1 September 2022, 46 % roads managed by MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. have been renovated. The largest expressway renovation in Hungary's history began in 2023.

"According to our contract with the Hungarian State, we have to bring the technical parameters of the pavement of the 1237 kilometres of motorway we manage to the same technical level everywhere. This task must be completed by 31 August 2025"

– can be read on the MKIF website.

The levelling represents 538 kilometres, 43 % of the main line. Large-scale resurfacing was also carried out on the sections not affected by the levelling, where this was justified for traffic safety reasons.

There was one where 27-year-old paving was replaced

In 2023, 19% of the 19% of the expressways operated by MKIF were resurfaced on 3.6 million square metres, and in 2024, another 27 % of the main line were resurfaced to replace the old, deteriorated and aged asphalt layer, on about 5.1 million square metres.

According to official data from the National Roads Data Bank (OKA), 46% of our roads have been renewed in the two years between the start of the concession, 1 September 2022, and 1 September 2024.

Of the oldest roads, the M1, M3 and M7 have made the most progress. It was not uncommon for these motorways to be paved for 15-20 or even 27 years. For this reason, especially in the case of the M3, it was often necessary to replace the layers in several stages. Sometimes even the structural parts had to be removed during the reconstruction. During these two years, the pavement age was renewed in 68 % on the M1, 36 % on the M3 and 54 % on the M7.

A further 16% of the road network to be renewed next year

In addition to resurfacing and road safety repairs, the restoration of pavement damage caused by accidents and fires was also part of the ongoing maintenance tasks to ensure that road users can continue to travel safely.

"In 2025, we will continue the work we have started, with plans to modernise a further 16 % of the road network under our management"

- the company said.

Traffic has increased many times over the last decade and the capacity of the tracks is no longer sufficient to cope with it everywhere and at all times. They plan to start a 10-year, HUF 4,000 billion development period in autumn 2025 with the widening of the M1, and by 2034 they will have widened 299 km of motorway (M1, M3, M7) and built 279 km of new motorway.
