Contractor sought for first phase of Polish high-speed rail project
Poland has taken an important step towards high-speed rail transport: the state-owned company Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) has issued the first tender for the construction of a high-speed railway line. The development was reported by a Czech railway portal, which provides detailed information on the main parameters of the project.
The section will be built to Poland's new central superhub.
The new railway line will be part of the new connection between Warsaw and Łódź. The future winner of the public procurement contract will have to build a 13-kilometre-long railway section between Kotowice, located in the Warsaw agglomeration, and the planned new central airport, Port Polska.
The Port Polska will be built between Warsaw and Łódź as Poland's new central superhub. The complex, which will include one of Europe's largest airports, is scheduled to be completed by 2032.
„Y-shaped high-speed network
The planned speed of the new railway line in question is 350 km/h. According to the article, the highest permitted railway speed in Poland is currently 200 km/h on the Warsaw–Gdańsk line.
Poland's first high-speed railway line is planned as a „Y” system. This means that the line will split in two in Łódź, with one branch leading to Wrocław and the other to Poznań. According to the plans, the line will be able to carry up to 21 million passengers per year.
Travel time reduced from 70 minutes to 40 minutes
As for the remaining sections of the express railway, CPK has already submitted permit applications for 10 out of 12 sections, with the permit for the first section already available. Work has already begun in Łódź on the urban tunnel connection, which will later become part of the high-speed railway, but with a lower speed limit.
The new railway line will significantly reduce travel times. The journey between Warsaw and Łódź will be reduced to approximately 40 minutes, compared to the current 70 minutes. The new central airport will be less than 20 minutes away from Warsaw by rail.
The Warsaw–Łódź high-speed rail section is scheduled to open in 2032, at the same time as the airport. The additional sections Łódź–Sieradz–Wrocław and Łódź–Poznań are expected to be operational by the end of 2035.
