The National Concession Office has launched a conditional public procurement procedure for the development and operation of the M86–M87 expressways.

The National Concession Office has launched a conditional public procurement tender for the development and operation of the M86-M87 expressway, according to data from EU public procurement data.

The aim of the M86–M87 expressway development project is to significantly modernise the transport infrastructure of western Hungary. The investment involves not only the construction of new road sections, but also the reconstruction and renovation of existing roads, as well as the long-term operation, maintenance and financing of the entire network.

The construction of the M87 expressway between Szombathely and Kőszeg, together with the M86 road, can be carried out under a concession model. The project covers a total of 196.425 kilometres of road and deals with road, engineering, environmental and operational tasks in a complex manner.

The expressway section between Szombathely and Kőszeg will connect to the M86 motorway.

Previous news</According to the news, the 16.3-kilometre section of the M87 expressway from Szombathely to Kőszeg and the national border will be completed by the end of 2030, along with the renovation of 15.8 kilometres of lower-order roads managed by the state and the construction of several kilometres of new roads. Traffic will be able to travel on 2×2 lanes on the section of the M87 between Szombathely and Kőszeg.

In addition, a new 8.5-kilometre section will be built connecting main roads 87 and 89, completing the missing section of the road bypassing Szombathely from the north. New roundabouts will be built at the junction of main roads 86, 87 and 89, and the planned road will connect to the existing 86 expressway and the 87 motorway currently under construction.

New constructions and developments

One of the most important elements of the investment is the construction of new expressway and main road sections. Within this framework:

  • 41.5 km long new, 2×2 lane expressway is being built,
  • 5.7 km the existing expressway will be rebuilt,
  • 8.8 km new, 2×1 lane main road established,
  • 12.1 km construction and correction of side roads will be carried out.

The roads are constructed with a modern, flexible and semi-rigid track structure in accordance with the applicable technical specifications.

Renovation works

As part of the project, several existing road sections may also be renovated:

  • 3.1 km main road and 6.3 km side road renewed,
  • Certain sections of main roads 86 and 87 will be renovated, including checkpoints.

As part of the project, two existing sections of the main road may also be renovated, for which no separate building permit is required.

One of the affected road sections is a shorter part of main road 86, located between the northern roundabout of the M80 motorway and the newly constructed road section. The road surface and related elements will be modernised on this section.

The other renovation project concerns the eastern bypass of Kőszeg on main road 87 and the section between the Hungarian-Austrian border. Not only will the road be renovated here, but also the checkpoint located on this section. The renovation covers the section of road specified in the current road profile.

Junctions and engineering structures

To ensure smooth and safe traffic flow:

  • 8 separate levels and 13-level junction can be built,
  • in total 62 works of art may be implemented or renewed, including:
    • 40 new bridges,
    • 7 wildlife crossings,
    • 5 railway level crossings,
    • Renovation of 8 existing bridges,
    • Demolition of 2 bridges.

In addition, a new level crossing may also be constructed.

Additional facilities

An important part of the project is also the development of infrastructure related to transport and operation:

  • 2 simple rest areas,
  • 2 axle load measuring stations,
  • 29.1 km of municipal roads (paved and dirt roads),
  • 90 km long wildlife fence,
  • 6.1 km cycle path construction.

In addition, an engineering facility with a usable floor space of 10,836 m² may be built, part of which will consist of two buildings constructed with laminated timber support structures.
