Work is continuing on the expansion of the M1 motorway in the Biatorbágy area.

MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. has released another spectacular on-site video about the expansion of the M1 motorway. In a Facebook post, the company used drone footage to show the progress made over the past week on the section near Biatorbágy.

According to the company, some of the footage was taken last Thursday and some yesterday, clearly showing the rapid progress being made on the main track, the junction slip road and the cycle path currently under construction.

The access road could be handed over by the end of May

According to the information published

Work is proceeding according to schedule, and the affected slip road is expected to open to traffic at the end of May.

What makes the section currently under construction unique is that this is where the final road structure for the M1 motorway extension will be completed first. The company emphasised that the new surface is one and a half times thicker than the previous one, with a total asphalt layer of 32 centimetres.

Thousands of cubic metres of earth are being moved

The works involve significant earthworks. According to the MKIF report, approximately 6,000 cubic metres of earth will be moved in this section, whilst in places the existing track structure has been excavated to a depth of 100–120 centimetres and will be completely rebuilt.

Over the past few weeks, two points have been created on the section currently undergoing expansion where traffic can merge and weave between the diverted and original lanes, thereby helping to maintain a steady flow of traffic alongside the construction work.

Digital signs help with traffic management

As part of the project, modern traffic management technology is also being used. According to information from MKIF, digital variable message signs (VMS) based on German technology, which communicate with one another, have been installed at several points along the relevant section.

By monitoring traffic flow, the system provides real-time updates to road users, ensuring faster information and safer travel through the construction zone.

An animation of the 2+1+1 traffic diversion system

The MKIF has also created a special animation has also been created to inform road users about how the current traffic layout will be converted into the expanded carriageway, and exactly how the so-called 2+1+1 diversion system works.

The company also emphasised that all key information relating to the M1 motorway development – including maps, diversions, junction access details and information on service areas – is available on the project’s official multilingual website.
