Work is progressing on the M3: resurfacing and the construction of noise barriers are both underway
This year, staff from MKIF are carrying out renovation work at 19 locations on the M3 motorway.
The MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. is developing the motorway network simultaneously at numerous locations across the country. Work is currently underway at five sites along the M3 motorway. As we have learnt from the company:
„This year, we are planning a total of 19 projects on the M3 motorway, including the demolition and reconstruction of the noise barrier surrounding the bridge over the Keleti Main Canal, as well as the refurbishment of the Mogyoród, Hatvan and Rohod junctions.”
In many places, the binder course has also been rebuilt
On the carriageway heading towards the capital, on the section between kilometre markers 21 and 25, construction work began at the end of March and was successfully completed by the MKIF team on 28 May. The works affected the working, deceleration, acceleration, main and overtaking lanes – those where no resurfacing had taken place in previous years.
In addition, the slip roads at the Mogyoród junction have also been refurbished.
„The resurfacing was carried out in several layers (mainly wearing and binder courses), and we also cleared the associated drainage system, repaired the damaged sections and cleaned the separation strips between the concrete guide blocks,” they said.
They are also replacing a bridge expansion joint at Bagna
On the side of the track heading towards Budapest, between kilometres 37 and 45, the concessionaire began work on the diversion on 18 May. Here too, the aim was to repair the road surface and clean the ancillary elements; however, as the refurbishment work on this section had largely been completed in previous years, only a relatively short section remained to be maintained this year.
In addition to resurfacing the bridge spanning the Budapest–Hatvan railway line at the 42 km mark, the expansion joints, which are in poor condition, also need to be repaired.
„In both cases, we are building on the resurfacing work carried out in previous years” programmes, thereby improving travel comfort,” they summarised.
We can still use two lanes even whilst the roadworks are underway
The diversions are designed in such a way that the number of lanes originally available is maintained during the works (subject to speed restrictions); consequently, there will be no reduction in capacity as a result of the refurbishment works.
The refurbishment of the Mogyoród junction, which plays a significant role in metropolitan transport, was completed back in April. „The works had to be scheduled so that the closure took place during the spring half-term, when commuter traffic is lighter.”
„In June and July, we will also be carrying out resurfacing work on the carriageway leading towards the national border, which will include the refurbishment of the junction. We have started this work to coincide with the summer holidays, with the road closed for approximately one week.”
