Bound track
Platform construction begins at Keleti railway station
On 12 January, work will begin on the reconstruction of the platform between tracks 12 and 13 at Keleti Railway Station between tracks 12 and 13 will begin, according to a MÁVINFORM announcement.
Trains from Délegyháza, Kelebia and Belgrade will arrive here after passenger traffic commences, they added.
As reported, the track closure ordered due to the construction of the Southern Circular Railway will allow for the completion of the 300-metre-long, 6-metre-wide platform accessibility project without any significant traffic restrictions, as most long-distance trains from Transdanubia affecting Keleti will turn around at Kelenföld during this period, meaning that far fewer trains than usual will arrive at the main station.
This will also make Keleti Railway Station suitable for receiving Chinese-made low-floor trains on the soon-to-be-launched <a href="https://magyarepitok.hu/temak/budapest-belgrad-vasutvonal" target="_blank" rel="noopener"Budapest-Belgrade railway line, which will soon be launched. which the Serbian railway company intends to operate on the line.
Extensive technical interventions in the platform area
The announcement recalls that during railway track and station developments and renovations in Hungary, high platforms were built everywhere, which – according to the standards commonly applied in Europe – are 55 centimetres above the rail crown (the upper part of the rail, i.e. the running surface).
The same is being done at Keleti Railway Station, where approximately 1,800 square metres of platform area is being rebuilt, together with the associated layer structure, meaning that 34 cable and utility manholes are also affected by the work, as these also need to be raised. During the accessibility improvements, 500 square metres of new tactile paving will be installed on the platform and connecting pavement sections. In addition, the platform roof support columns will also be preserved to prevent rusting and ensure that they remain intact for decades to come. Track regulation will also be carried out on the tracks next to the platforms and on the connecting switches (turnouts).
The demolition will continue until the end of January, and the construction phase will be completed by the end of February. Scheduled traffic on the Budapest-Belgrade line, which complies with all strict European Union standards and is supported by the required safety equipment and ETCS system, can start at the earliest from this point.
Detailed information about timetable changes is available in the MÁV+ application and on the MAVPlusz.hu website.
