The development of the Hercegszántó–Béreg border crossing will open the route to heavy goods vehicles. Contract Délút will have 40 months to complete the work.

Although the Hercegszántó border crossing currently only handles passenger traffic and light goods vehicles, with the expansion secured by Délút will see it transformed into a fully-fledged international freight hub.

According to the documents relating to the conditional public procurement documents, contractors will have approximately 15 billion forints and 40 months at their disposal for the development of the border section of Main Road 51.

It will be a fully-fledged crossing

The length of the section in question is 382.9 metres, where the task involves both the exit and entry sides of the border crossing point

  • 2×2 lanes for heavy goods vehicles,
  • 2×2 bus lanes,
  • 2×4 lanes for passenger vehicles, as well as lanes for pedestrians and cyclists,
  • Construction of a waiting/parking area for heavy goods vehicles with 40 spaces on the exit side and 42 spaces on the entry side.

It is also necessary to construct a route on each side that allows oversized vehicles to pass unimpeded. On the entrance side, a three-bay parking area must be provided for heavy goods vehicles carrying dangerous goods. Staff and customer car parks, as well as covered inspection bays, must also be provided. The total area of the paved surfaces – asphalt and concrete – suitable for road traffic to be constructed is 44,530 m²2.

A further task involves the construction of a new central office building, a toll operator building and a toilet block, along with ancillary structures featuring canopies and protective roofs, following the demolition of the existing buildings. This also includes the construction of weighbridges (continuously operating weighing stations capable of measuring axle load and gross weight) on both the exit and entry sides, a control station with a canopy, a customs inspection building (with open and enclosed sections), and a bus terminal.

The extension of Route 51 must also be taken into account

The northern section of the border crossing point – the section facing Baja – must be adapted to accommodate the widened 2×2-lane Route 51 and the parallel cycle path. As the development of Route 51 is expected to take place at a later date, the contractor must ensure that, in addition to creating a 2×2+1-lane configuration at the border crossing, a connection back to the current 2×1-lane configuration is provided.

Key volumes are expected to be:

  • Earthworks: 53,050 m3
  • Construction of a hydraulic-bound road structure: 4,910 m3
  • Demolition work related to road construction: 4,103 m3
  • Construction of a bituminous road surface: 6,312 m3
  • Laying of paving stones: 6,930 m2
  • Construction of buildings: 3,452.9 m²
  • Construction of canopies and awnings: 7,594.1 m²
