The Colas could modernise the north-south axis of the Avas housing estate in Miskolc, which is nearly three kilometres long.

As we learnt from the public procurement notice: The Miskolc local authority aims to resurface the 2×2-lane divided carriageway on Szentgyörgy út and Klapka György út, and, as a continuation of this, the 2×1-lane carriageway on Pattantyús Ábrahám Géza út. The work may be carried out by the experts at Colas.

The entire north-south axis is affected

Stretching 2,241 metres in length, this dual-carriageway with 2×2 lanes – comprising Szentgyörgy Road and Klapka György Road – carries the traffic of one of Hungary’s most famous housing estates. The main road Avas, serving a population of 40,000, carries a very heavy volume of traffic, and its continuation, Pattantyús Ábrahám Géza Road, also bears a significant load. The 489-metre-long, 2×1-lane section leads from the Avasi viewpoint into the centre of the district.

Although the main task is to replace the road surface, the pavements alongside Pattantyús Ábrahám Géza út may also be refurbished, along with the replacement of a 114-metre-long tubular guardrail designed to protect pedestrians. The roads affected by the development are bounded to the south by Miskolctapolcai út and to the north by Mendikás dűlő.

There are six bus stops, nine bus bays and twenty-one pedestrian crossings on the roads in question, all of which can be made accessible thanks to the work carried out under project Colas.

The renovation work is being carried out in 700-metre sections

We asked the experts at Colas for details of the project. As they explained, they are replacing kerbs, the asphalt binder and wearing courses, as well as the CP surfacing at bus stops along the entire length of the road.

„At the junction of Szentgyörgy and Klapka roads,” they said, “we divided the right-hand and left-hand carriageways into three sections, each roughly 700 metres long.”

In the first phase, work will take place on the right-hand track on Section I, on the left-hand track on Section II, and on the right-hand track on Section III. In the second phase, work will take place on the left-hand track on Section I, on the right-hand track on Section II, and on the left-hand track on Section III.

„We are currently working on the second phase, which began on 29 June. Pattantyús Street was closed on 29 June; only public transport vehicles are permitted to pass through, in accordance with the temporary traffic arrangements.”

In several places, the entire track structure needs to be replaced

As the main road bisecting the area, Szentgyörgy út handles heavy traffic at the junction with Ifjúság út; for this reason, the cutting and asphalting works are being coordinated with particular care in consultation with experts from Miskolc City Transport Zrt..

„We also need to replace the road surface at the end of Klapka György út, along the entire length of Pattantyús utca – 489 metres – and on Szentgyörgy utca, over a distance of roughly 168 metres,” we were told.

So, whilst renovation work is being carried out – meaning that the current technical specifications will remain in place after the renovation – in several places the contractors will also need to carry out work on the road sub-base and structure. The scale of the work involved is clearly illustrated by the fact that the project involves milling 48,000 m2 of road surface, repairing 227 utility manholes, and laying more than 4,200 m3 of binder course and nearly 2,000 m3 of wearing course.
